This is an excerpt from Maya Angelou's work, Why the Caged Bird Sings. This assessment asks students to do a close reading of a portion of the work.
Students will be assessed on:
1. Reading and identifying specific details in the passage.
2. Comparing and contrasting how the field workers felt in the mornings and in the afternoons after a hard day's work.
3. Writing short and extended responses to the work.
I use this to help students prepare to write a five paragraph response essay. I've also used this to help students prepare for state testing. Questions include multiple intelligence, difficulty levels.
