Learning about gases as a state of matter is a difficult concept for many young students. Research indicates that young children do not often accept gases as matter.
From my experience, I believe that in order to conceptualize and develop a deeper understanding of the concept of matter, students need to know the criteria used by scientists to define matter.
This is a stand-alone lesson you can use with students to develop a more meaningful idea of why gases are matter.
The lesson is designed using the 5E teaching model. The Engagement, Exploration, and Explanation are written in details with photos and directions to the teacher for successful implementation of this lesson.
Ideas for THREE possible elaborations are also provided with a Homework as a summative assessment.
Lesson plan includes several probing questions for teachers, who may be new to teaching, to ask the students to ensure that they develop conceptual knowledge and understanding of gases as being matter.
Teach and be taught :)
