This resource is an excerpt from an interview with an economic historian about why Europe industrialized before China. This was used in a modern world history course during the unit on the Industrial Revolution. It was a "big ideas" moment where we explored this question through the literacy strategies of annotations and determining importance. Difficult words and phrases are footnoted to aid in student understanding. It led to a class discussion about the reasons for the "great divergence" and how China is now quickly catching back up (and surpassing) Western Europe and North America in regards to industrialization and economic output.
