Description

Students can learn and practice how to add single digit numbers using pictures and models. The use of visuals can be helpful while teaching beginning learners this basic addition skill.

Give your students the chance to practice this skill with these worksheets. Included in this packet is a teaching guide, which can be used as a resource to teach students the steps of how to solve single digit addition problems. There are also two practice pages which use pictures and models in order to provide students with more guided support from the teacher. Plus, there are 20 more additional pages provided for independent practice. The first five independent practice pages use pictures and models and help show students the relationship between horizontal and vertical problems. These practice pages help students understand the process of single digit addition before applying what they know to solving addition problems written in the vertical format. The other 15 independent practice pages have addition problems written in the vertical format with 25 problems on each page. Answer keys are included for easy grading.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
