In cooperative learning environments, students should be actively involved in exploring the phenomena in the natural world posing questions and seeking answers as they arise. Students develop simple skills of observation, measurement, and number sense.

Younger students learn best in cooperative learning environments by developing ideas, testing them, and observing their idea compared with other students’ ideas. Listening skills should be explicitly taught so that students learn that there is no correct answer, there are only ways to improve ones ideas based on evidence and support from their peers.

When students engage in cooperative learning environments, they retain information better and outperform students who do not participate in cooperative learning environments on standardized tests.
