Week 1: Tall Tales -
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be comparing 2 versions of the Paul Bunyan Story by two different authors. They also take an in-depth look into the story of John Henry and identify key parts that classify it as a Tall Tale. Exaggeration is a key part of the weekly lesson plan. Students identify examples of exaggeration all week.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
explain what a tall tale is
give the 4 characteristics of a tall tale
give an example of exaggeration
identify details related to Paul Bunyan and John Henry
Write at least 4 sentences describing their favorite tall tale

The Tall Tale Books you will need are:
American Tall Tales by Mary Pope Osborne
Paul Bunyan by Steven Kellogg
John Henry by Julius Lester

Week 2 - Fairy Tales & Western Fairy Tales
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be comparing the original fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea with the western version, The Cowboy and the Black-Eyed Pea. They will also read the Gingerbread Man and The Gingerbread Cowboy. The students will continually identify the elements of a fairy tale and look for those elements throughout the week in all the fairy tales read.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
explain what a fairy tale is
give the 7 elements of a fairy tale
match sentences from fairy tales to the fairy tale elements
Write at least 4 sentences describing their favorite fairy tale

The Fairy Tale Books you will need are:
The Princess and the Pea - the original version
The Cowboy and the Black-Eyed Pea by Tony Johnston
The Gingerbread Man - any version
The Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires and Holly Berry

Week 3 – Western Poetry
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be listening to and reading western poetry. Before they read each poem, they learn about the author. They also learn the 4 steps to follow when reading poetry.
Throughout the week, they record and annotate in a Poetry Booklet that is included in this zipped file. They learn to annotate over poetry to understand the meaning of the words.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
give the 4 steps to follow when reading a poem
match the name of 3 western poems to the authors
read a western poem and identify the mood and the structure
write at least 3 sentences explaining a poem they read during the week

Week 4 – Novel Study - Ghost Town at Sundown
As a class, students study the Ghost Town at Sundown novel by Mary Pope Osborne. They answer questions related to their book in their student response journal (included). Throughout the week, they watch videos and listen to songs related to key ideas in their book to build background knowledge.
The lesson plan contains the following:

+Vocabulary / Comprehension book - It can be copied front and back to form a small booklet to record answers throughout week OR you could have them paste the 1/2 sheets into their reading journals each day.

I have also included the links to the You Tube Videos used and the Smithsonian video used. The plan does include one reference to a United Streaming video that you will need a membership to access.

Please note that I have not included an answer key.


Week 5 – George Catlin
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about the life of George Catlin through a fiction and nonfiction text. They will be observing several paintings by George Catlin and taking an in-depth look at 2 famous paintings. They will also be recreating a painting and writing an informative paper on the life of George Catlin as a culminating activity.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
explain the life of George Catlin
tell why his contributions are significant
identify at least 2 famous paintings by George Catlin
The book titles needed for this lesson are -
A Portrait of Spotted Deer’s Grandfather by Amy Littlesugar (fiction)
The Man Who Painted Indians: George Catlin by Nancy Plain (nonfiction)
Painting the Wild Frontier: The Art And Adventures of George Catlin by Susanna Reich (optional - may need for images)

+ Artist study booklet for the students to record answers throughout lesson. This booklet was created to be copied front and back. It is formatted in the order that it should be printed and folded.

No test included .. culminating activity consist of an art activity and an informative writing paper.

Week 6 – Cowboys & the Pony Express

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about cowboys and cowgirls through a nonfiction text by Gail Gibbons titled Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee-Yay! They will be using the book to learn about diagrams and main ideas and details in a multi-paragraph text. They will also be learning about the role cowboys played in the Pony Express. At the end of the week, students will participate in a culminating activity where they use the information they have learned about cowboys and the Pony Express to complete a map activity.

The book titles needed for this lesson are -
Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee Yay! by Gail Gibbons - you will need at least 1 copy of this book. However, it would be helpful if you had additional copies for the students to refer to during an activity.

Off Like the Wind!: The First Ride of the Pony Express by Michael Spradlin (only 1 copy needed)

Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express by Eleanor Coerr (only 1 copy needed)

By the end of the week, they are able to:
diagram an illustration with correct labels.
identify the main idea and supporting details on a page in a book.
explain the Pony Express.
compare and contrast two stories about the Pony Express.
use a map to answer questions about cowboys and the Pony Express.

No test included .. culminating activity is a map activity where the students pretend they are riding as a Pony Express rider. They read the directions on the paper to mark a map of the Pony Express route from Missouri to California.

I have also included the pdf file and the word file of the lesson plan in case you would like to make changes.
