This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Wild West - Cowboys & the Pony Express. It is the Sixth week in my Wild West Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about cowboys and cowgirls through a nonfiction text by Gail Gibbons titled Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee-Yay! They will be using the book to learn about diagrams and main ideas and details in a multi-paragraph text. They will also be learning about the role cowboys played in the Pony Express. At the end of the week, students will participate in a culminating activity where they use the information they have learned about cowboys and the Pony Express to complete a map activity.
The book titles needed for this lesson are -
Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee Yay! by Gail Gibbons - you will need at least 1 copy of this book. However, it would be helpful if you had additional copies for the students to refer to during an activity.
Off Like the Wind!: The First Ride of the Pony Express by Michael Spradlin (only 1 copy needed)
Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express by Eleanor Coerr (only 1 copy needed)
By the end of the week, they are able to:
diagram an illustration with correct labels.
identify the main idea and supporting details on a page in a book.
explain the Pony Express.
compare and contrast two stories about the Pony Express.
use a map to answer questions about cowboys and the Pony Express.
