Wild West Word Work: A Choice Menu for ELA Literacy Stations & More by Annie Sauriol
Students will have fun focusing on words as they use a Choice Menu (with different cactus “points”)! This tool allows students to choose and work hands-on with ANY form of text (informational OR fiction) they (or you) would like!
Students choose from 20 word work categories to collect a total of 30 cacti “points”! As they complete a task, they record their progress on a tracking sheet and mosey along towards their goal!
Included in this file:
-Directions/How I use this Menu
-Choice Menu with 20 (reusable) categories of varying difficulty
-Tracking Sheet for Students
-Awards for being a “Wild West Word Work Champion”
I use this as a work station during literacy centers and a “go to activity” when children have finished other work. The great thing, as with any Choice Menu, is this can be used over and over with different words associated with the tasks.
My students seem to really enjoy this Word Work Choice Menu and I have seen them seeking out text that they might not have otherwise—on their own!
I have learned from these choice menus that my students perform and try to do their best when they are able to have a choice and “direct” their own learning!
