What was the United States like in the 1800s? The answer to that question depends on whether you are talking about the beginning or the end of the century. From 1800 to 1899, the United States underwent major changes!

“Wild, Wild West Careers, Volume 1” looks at Westward Expansion in America during the 1800s by examining the careers of those men and women who paved the way and settled the land in the west. Each of the lessons covers the careers and information about the era as it relates to the career. Volume One includes: Explorers – Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea; Native American Chiefs, the Trail of Tears, and the Long Walk; Frontiersmen, Davy Crockett and the Alamo; Gold Miners and the California Gold Rush; Pony Express Riders, the Telegraph and Showmen; Homesteaders, Wagon Trains, and, the Donner Party. An outline of each lesson plan is listed below.

Wild West Careers: Explorers – Lewis and Clark
This product contains 6 one-page reading passages covering the Louisiana Purchase, the Corps of Discovery, Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, the Expedition and more. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the United States almost doubled in size. The Lewis and Clark’s Expedition to explore the new land began in 1804 and took over two years. Wild West Careers: Frontiersmen, Davy Crockett and the Alamo
This product contains 6 one-page reading passages covering the Frontier, the Frontiersmen, Davy Crockett, Texas Independence, the Alamo and more. Activities, review game, worksheet and teacher’s key are all included. In the early part of the 1800s, land west of the Mississippi River was complete wilderness. This land consisted of rivers, mountains, forests and prairies and was occupied by Native Americans and wild animals. The frontier was the name given to the wild and unfamiliar land that lay west of civilized America. Davy Crockett was a Frontiersman and was present at the 1836 Battle of the Alamo.

Wild West Careers: Pony Express Riders, the Telegraph and Buffalo Bills’ Wild West Show.
