The Bearstone DIFFERENTIATED Lesson & Activity Bundle includes enough resources to craft TWO seven week differentiated units. There is material crafted for a standard classroom, which anticipates & allows for slower pacing & extra support as needed for struggling learners or for students with accommodations, as well as material designed for enrichment, condensing comprehension & ideal for pushing gifted students to think critically.

STANDARD: Ch. 1-3, Ch. 4-6, Ch. 8-9, Ch. 15-16, Ch. 20-22
-Differentiation: Chapters are broken down into smaller sections to allow for adjustments in pacing. Space is provided on handouts for students’ written response.

ENRICHED: Ch. 1-7, Ch. 10-12, Ch. 13-15
-Differentiation: Only select chapter are covered. Questions are compacted & focus on higher order thinking. Students record their responses on a separate piece of paper.

** Ch. 1-7: Cloyd’s Conflicts
-Skill Focus: Literary Element – Conflict, Cause & Effect, Identifying Textual Support

STANDARD: Students explore the internal & external conflict that Cloyd experiences & then analyze how it impacts the plot & other characters.

** Ch. 1-8: Importance of Bears

STANDARD:
-Skill Focus: Fiction & Nonfiction Connections
-Differentiation: Students find five (5) examples from each text to support guiding questions.

ENRICHED:
-Skill Focus: Fiction & Nonfiction Connections, Writing Poetry
-Differentiation: Students find ten (10) examples from each text to support guiding questions, then extend learning by crafting a Two-Voice Poem.

** Ch. 9-12: Cloyd’s Crime & Punishment
-Skill Focus: Researching, Evaluating

STANDARD: Students learn about the juvenile justice system in their state & then compare it to Cloyd’s crime & punishment.

** Ch. 9-12: Bearstone & Touching Spirit Bear: Crime & Punishment
-Skill Focus: Compare & Contrast, Making Connections, Evaluation

ENRICHED: Students read an excerpt from Touching Spirit Bear & a nonfiction text about the juvenile justice system and then make comparisons between the two novels & the nonfiction text.
-Excerpt from Touching Spirit Bear NOT included.
-Differentiation: Students are comparing & evaluation multiple texts.

**Ch. 13-14: Figurative Language Exploration & Poetry
-Skill Focus: Figurative Language, Writing Poetry

STANDARD: Students practice identifying the author’s use of figurative language in the novel & then craft a poem to mirror his craft.

** Native American Bear Legends & Lore
-Skill Focus: Making Connections, Evaluating

ENRICHED: Students read four Native American Bear Legends & Lore to find similar characteristics between texts, & then they will build onto that information to make connections to the novel.
-Differentiation: Higher Order Critical Thinking Skills.

** Ch. 17-20: Poetry Connections
-Skill Focus: Characterization, Character Types, Cause & Effect, Plot Development, Symbolism, Thematic Exploration

ENRICHED: Students will evaluate Cloyd’s character development & its impact on the plot & theme of the novel.
-Differentiation: Higher Order Critical Thinking Skills.

**End of Novel: Type of Characters
-Skill Focus: Character Types, Identifying Textual Evidence

STANDARD: Students practice identifying the types of characters (round/flat, static/dynamic) found in the novel. Students need to support their answers with evidence from the text.

**End of Novel: Symbolism
-Skill Focus: Identifying Symbolism

STANDARD: Students explore recurring symbols that occur in the novel.

**End of Novel: Heart Map
-Skill Focus: Characterization

STANDARD: Students explore the development of Cloyd’s character through this creative, artistic activity! Great for visual learners!
