At the end of the novel, I give my students a Choice Board in order to have them show me that they have a true deep understanding of the novel.
In addition, I have the students conduct a peer review of their fellow students' projects prior to turning in the final project. This gives the students an authentic audience and a chance to improve.
The nine choices are varied to hit on the different styles of learning. The choices allow students to write, draw, or create poetry/songs to let me know that they understood what they were reading. Some of the choices have them infer about past and future events in the characters lives.
Choices include writing a newspaper article, a letter to a character, diary entries, creating a graphic representation, research project, rap/poem, creating a movie poster, imagining the sequel, and creating a picture book.
Included in the packet is: Choice Board, Text Evidence Forms, Rubric, and Peer Review Rubric.
You can also differentiate by stating how many of the choices that the students need to complete. My higher level students would be required to complete 3 choices.
