Product Description
This US History informational passage and assessment activity helps address several Common Core ELA Standards that are listed below this introduction and is suitable for Grades 5-8. Students will first read an engaging and informative 950-word biographical text on the significant but unappreciated American president William Howard Taft. This giant of a man worked as a governor, diplomat, and professor of law along with being the only American ever to serve as both President of the United States and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The article traces his life story chronologically as well as provides a review of the many accomplishments of this great American leader and statesman. Please see the Preview for the first page of the text and all of the assessment questions.

After the reading there are twenty-nine text-dependent multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions that require application of the Common Core Standards to the biography of Taft. Complete answers are provided for all questions.

This resource can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, absence work, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc).
