This is a powerpoint presentation about the rape trial of William Kennedy Smith, who made an excellent witness in his own defense. It includes the allegations by the three prior victims and their exclusion from evidence at trial plus allegations which occurred later made by two women in Chicago which were similar. This presentation includes the following information:
William Kennedy Smith met Patricia Bowman at a bistro in Palm Beach Florida in 1991. He was vacationing there with his Kennedy relatives at their estate in Palm Beach. With him at the bistro were his uncle Ted Kennedy and Ted’s son, Patrick, William’s cousin. Bowman was a Florida local, residing in nearby Jupiter. Bowman was at the bistro with two friends, Anne Mercer and her boyfriend.
Bowman went back to the Kennedy estate with Smith.
“I was taking him to the Kennedy home, which I assumed would have security. There was a senator there. I didn’t feel I was in any danger whatsoever.”
There they went outside to the oceanfront immediately outside the Kennedy estate. They walked along the ocean when Smith announced that he wanted to swim. He took off his clothes and Bowman began to walk away from him, uneasy about his disrobing. Her version is that he grabbed her and raped her. His version is that she initiated sexual contact by unbuttoning his trousers and that they then had consensual sex.
Bowman called her two friends, Anne and her boyfriend, to come and get her. To prove that Bowman had been at the estate they took an urn with them. Bowman went to the hospital and also filed her report with the police. The physical evidence showed she had had sex and there were also bruises on her body. The prosector’s office in Palm Beach decided to prosecute Smith for rape.
Smith hired an excellent legal team plus its investigators to defend him at his trial. His team was lead by Roy Black, a charismatic criminal defense attorney with an impressive record. At this time, Smith was a graduate of Duke University and currently a medical student at Georgetown University. An educated, intelligent defendant can make a good witness because such a person can often be trained and coached by the defense on exactly how to testify.
