Teaching and reading William Shakespeare’s “Othello” can be a challenge!

My Othello Unit is Common Core aligned and includes a total of 10 Power Points and 10 handouts aligned by day for ease of use.

This is a three week unit!

I have also provided at total of 96 reading comprehension questions with an answer key, a day by day reading guide, daily journal questions, an introductory web quest, daily review questions, a unit test, and final project.

All Power Points are organized by day so that following the unit will be quite easy.

As students read William Shakespeare’s “Othello,” they will analyze character, discuss prominent themes such as perception of women and race, and much, much more!

One daily assignment I love is the response booklet in which students have to write a one page response for a specific critical thinking question. It forces students to review that day’s lesson and to become more involved with the text.

The unit test includes 20 questions total which involves short answer questions for character analysis of Othello and Iago, explanation of significant quotes from the text, and explanation of specific themes. Lastly, there is a short essay question.

This isn’t an answer key as the test is entirely short answer. Therefore, students’ answers may vary; however, students must provide examples from the play to support their opinions.

The final project can be for partners, groups, or even individual work. The final projects has four parts. For example, for part one students have to complete some minor research to help them to further learn about women’s roles and attitude regarding race during the Elizabethan era.

My students’ favorite part in the overall project is writing their own plays! I have read quite a few interesting plays from my kids!

There is also an essay requirement.

This gives students a chance to extend their thinking after the reading of Shakespeare’s play.

Students are able to evaluate what they have read and are able to share their opinions on the given topic.

I have provided a “Read Me” document which will explain the two videos I allow my students to view during the unit.

The book we read in class is the following: Shakespeare Made Easy: Othello. This text is the modern English version with side by side full original text. This text is published by Barron's Publishing.
