Twenty-Two Reading Quizzes:
This download contains twenty-two quizzes over the five acts of this play. Each quiz covers an individual scene. Each quiz contains five to eight fill in the blank and short answer questions. The questions assess the students' comprehension of the material that they have read. Answer keys have been included for each quiz. These quizzes are a great way to assess if your students have an understanding of the characters, setting, and action of the story
Author Biography Workbook Activity
This download contains a seven page workbook over the life, career, and accomplishments of England's national poet. Included is a workbook cover for the students to use on their assignments. The workbook is designed to be fill in the blank and short answer questions. A page has been included for the students to cite the sources they use to complete the workbook. I used this assignment as an introduction to Romeo and Juliet with my ninth grade honors students. It took them two forty-five minute class periods to complete this assignment.
This assignment directs the students to look for irony within Shakespeare's play. The students are tasked with identifying examples of dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony within the play. Pages reviewing the definitions of irony have also been included. I have used this assignment as both an individual assignment and a group assignment.
Anticipation Guide and Reading Questions
This download contains a pre-reading and post-reading assignment for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
The first page of the assignment contains a graph with ten statements. The statements all deal directly with concepts or ideas that the students will encounter when reading the play. The students must agree or disagree with the statements. They students will then determine whether the play agrees or disagrees with the statements throughout their reading assignments.
After they have read the whole play, they will complete the Post-Reading Writing Assignment.
Please note that the teaching duration for this assignment was set at one week. That was the length of time that my students needed to read the entire play from start to finish and complete the post-reading assignment. Filling out the initial anticipation guide only took my students about ten minutes.
The second page of this download contains five pre-reading questions that ask the students to use their prior knowledge and experiences to answer the questions. These were a great way for my students to link their prior experiences to the text before they even read the novel.
Quote Analysis Activity
This download contain an activity that tasks the students with analyzing nine quotes from Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet. Nine significant quotations have been selected for this assignment. The students will need to identify the speaker, who is being spoken to, and the act in which the quote is found. The students will also need to answer three unique analysis questions about the speaker's motivation, meaning, and mentality. The assignment can be given as a group assignment or as an individual assignment.
I have used this as an assignment on days when I will be out with a sub. It worked very well! I assigned three quotes to each group, and it took the students about forty minutes to complete the assignment.
The analysis questions also provide great class discussion starters
