Product Description
This lesson plan will allow students to explore Pontiac's War or the Pontiac Rebellion which takes place right after the French and Indian War in 1763. Students will explore a primary source: a journal written by William Trent who is trapped in Fort Pitt for several months while Native Americans lay siege to the community that will later be known as Pittsburgh.

The teacher will need to download and print out the primary source from the following link or direct students to the website:

http://hsp.org/sites/default/files/legacy_files/migrated/pagesfromwilliamtrentsjournal.pdf
Click here to view the primary source.

The journal is great for students because it describes the life of average people during the war and shows the writing style of a common person from 1763. The journal has references to everyday life, scalping, smallpox blankets, and has a fair amount of suspense. A total of 53 questions are included and the assignment should be broken up over several class periods or as homework over several days. A teacher answer sheet is included.

Students who struggle with reading may have a hard time finding the answers. If the journal is too hard to read for some students, I have also included the following link that pulls some key moments or events out of the journal.

I kept this assignment in Word, so teachers can modify as needed for their students, please do not post this assignment online as that would violate the terms of use.
