Wind Instrument Grading Rubric & Lesson Plan
I created this rubric to select the highest-achieving students for small ensemble performance at our fall concert. I knew that some of the students in the ensemble would benefit from an additional challenge, but I wanted a way to choose these students.
What I did not expect to learn from this rubric was the areas that I needed to improve on as a teacher. After using the rubric I learned that I was focusing on posture, tone, and rhythm, but was neglecting areas like articulation, hand positioning, and note value.

This grading rubric includes the following student performance criteria:
-Posture
-Tone
-Dynamics
-Articulation
-Hand Positioning
-Breath Support
-Rhythm & Note Value
-Note Accuracy

3= Excellent
2= Improving
1= Needs Attention

Lesson & Assessment Objectives:
-To assess each student's performance on a wind instrument.
-To give each student individualized feedback for growth and improvement.
-To identify individual strengths
-To identify ensemble strengths
-To identify individual areas that need improvement
-To identify ensemble areas that need improvement.
