Description

Wind Up Toy Companion for Articulation
A Speech Therapy activity for younger elementary students

This activity was designed to be a simple, no-prep activity to target articulation in an engaging way. This version includes the following sounds: Initial/medial/final: p, b, m, n, t, d, k, g, f; initial h, y, w; sblends (separate mats for sp, st, sm, sn, sk, sl, sw) in color and black & white. These mats were created as a way to use wind up toys for articulation practice (wind up toys not included, must be purchased separately).

→ Materials Needed: Wind Up Artic mat, wind up toy, books (optional to use as a barrier).

→ Suggestion: I use the slower moving wind ups, the quick ones make this activity a little difficult. If you only have the fast kind, please see version 2 below on how you can still use them with this product.

To use:
→ Version 1: Twist a wind up toy and place it on the start line. As it travels, practice the words it crosses over. You can practice as it travels or wait until it stops and practice the words it traveled over afterwards (the depends on how fast your wind up is). If the wind up gets to the edge of the mat, simply turn it around so it can find more articulation words to cross over! Repeat this as many times as you want! The therapist will determine how many trials per word.

→ Version 2: Place the wind up on each circle and practice the target word. After all of the words are practiced, wind up the toy at the start line and watch it go. In this version, the wind up toy is a reward for practicing the words.

→ Optional: Use books to create a barrier around the mat so the wind-up can’t go off of it. My wind ups don’t turn around automatically, so I still have to turn them when the get to the edge of the mat.
