The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Winds of Change." In my progression, this would be week 4, however they do not have to be taught all together or in this particular order. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and 4 student activity pages (one designed as a quiz on text features). There is also an additional links to videos and websites if you have access you YouTube, United Streaming or Brainpopjr.com. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.

The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.

The focus standards are:

RI.1.5 Know and use various text features to locate key facts of information in a text

RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text

Optional: RI.1.9 Identify basic similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic

Students will work independently, or in pairs or small groups to read an online article about wind and answer questions. They will learn to identify and use text features to learn about tornadoes and answer questions based on the book “Storms” by Miriam Goin. They will continue to learn about tornadoes by looking at video clips and listening to “Tornadoes” by Gail Gibbons. There are also optional activities and links throughout the plans.
