Winter Alphabet Book
: This book is a great way to explore winter while encouraging literacy. Each letter corresponds with a winter-themed vocabulary word which will help children practice letter sounds. Print one for each child, or a few for a center. You could also have children create their own winter themed alphabet to go along with each of the letters.
Mitten Letter Match
: Help students practice letter recognition and associating capital letters with lowercase letters. Have them match the capital letter mitten with the corresponding lowercase letter mitten to create a pair of mittens. These can also be used to practice letter sounds and spell simple words.
Snowman Mini Books
: This book is a great way to encourage students to think creatively and logically, while practicing their writing skills. In order to complete this mini book, students must consider what they would wear, what they would eat, how they would feel, what they might want, where they would live, what they would do, what they would like, and what they would not do if they were a snowman. The answers that your students come up with for each of these questions are sure to be insightful, and all of the answers can be compiled into a mini-book, which is sure to be a favorite keepsake for many families.
: Practice counting all winter long with these numbered snowman mats. Collect buttons and then count the correct number of buttons onto each snowman. This download includes two sets of counting mats; the first set has circle for the correct number of buttons, the second set does not. This allows you to challenge the children who need it, while supporting those who do not yet recognize all of their numbers. This counting set is for practicing numbers 1-10.
: This set is perfect for patterning practice during your winter units. The different colors and shapes of the snowflakes lend themselves to different levels of patterns – different shaped snowflakes in the same colors for your students who need more of a challenge (they’ll really have to look at the shapes of the snowflakes to determine which one comes next), and the same shaped snowflakes in different colors for students who need something more basic (they can focus on the color of the snowflake, because they are all the same shape). I have included snowflake shapes that you can cut out for children to complete the patterns. The best thing about this set is that if you lose the pieces that complete the patters you can always print out more!
