Description

Need an engaging resource to hold your students' attention before the holiday break? This activity will get them thinking and motivated to solve the problem of saving Sam the Snowman and aligns with NGSS 3-5 ETS 1-1. This inquiry resource is a winter STEM activity. Students will use their knowledge of simple machines to create a way to trap Sam the Snowman from melting in the warm temperatures.

This resource includes:

  • "How to Use" sheet to walk teachers through this lesson
  • Four-page resource for students to plan and design their snowman trap, record observations, and answer comprehension questions
  • TWO versions of the stem activity
    • Students use their knowledge of simple machines to construct a trap for Sam the Snowman
      • This version includes: six nonfiction research articles on levers, pulley, wheel and axle, wedge, inclined plane, and screw
      • Each reading packet includes background information as well as comprehension questions
      • An answer key is included
    • An additional version allows students to use given materials to design and create a trap. This allows students to work on their inquiry thinking skills.
  • A rubric to assess students
