Winter Addition Word Problems
This is a set of 6 different winter addition word problems. Students will use 4 different strategies, to solve the problem. These strategies are illustrations, a ten frame, a number line, and tallies. They will show their problem in an equation format and write their answer using the number word that shows how many in all. They will write their friend’s name and their own name in the problem and roll 2 number dice to determine the addends. If they roll a 6 they roll again. I cover the 6 on the dice if I use dice. I usually take a wooden cube and write the numbers 1 – 5 on it. On the black space I write one of the numbers again. You can also write the numbers in the blank that you want the students to work with instead of rolling dice.
The children will add their name and a friend’s to the word problem. They will roll 2 number dice to determine the addends in the problem. Then they will solve the problem with illustrations, the ten frame, the number line, and tallies. They will show their moves on the number line and circle the number that shows how many.
