This money-saving bundle includes both interactive digital Boom Cards and printable (unplugged) materials that provide fun ways for young students to practice and learn the basics of computer coding and programming.

The engaging activities provide practice in both following code and creating code as well as sequencing skills, problem-solving, logical thinking, cause and effect skills, and computational thinking.

    Print (Unplugged) Materials

You receive a printable hands-on coding activity plus 20 printable coding practice pages with answer keys.

The printable activities can be used as an introduction to coding prior to using the digital Boom Cards or in conjunction with the digital Boom Cards.

    Hands-On Coding Activity

In this winter coding activity, students first design a map or grid of a ski slope and then act as computer programmers to design basic code in the correct sequence that will command a skier or snowboarder to follow the path and move to a select location (end point) on the ski slope.

Many different designs, end points, and codes can be created making each play different!

This activity can be done whole group, individually, or with partners.

    You receive:

    • 20 different design pieces
    • 5 different movable skiers and snowboarders
    • Directional arrow coding cards
    • A map / grid of a ski slope
    • Printable code recording page

Printable Practice Pages with Answer Keys

You also receive 10 printable practice pages for following code with answer keys.

Students draw the path down the ski slope by following the code in the correct sequence starting in the top left box with the star. Complete the pages with pencils, crayons, Dot Painters, or place them in page protectors and use dry erase markers so pages can be used over and over again.

Also includes 10 printable practice pages for creating code with answer keys.

Students create the code for the highlighted path down the ski slope by drawing directional arrows in each coding box across the top.

    Digital Materials

You also receive 2 digital Boom Card decks that are self-checking and include audio directions so young students can work independently. They can be used on your interactive whiteboard, iPads, desktop, tablet, smartphone or with Google classroom.

In the first deck, students move either a skier or snowboarder to the correct place on the ski slope by following the code. This helps students learn the importance of following each step of code in the correct sequence in order to get the the desired response and why sequence matters in a computer program.

In the second deck, students create the code for the highlighted blue path down the ski slope by dragging and dropping the arrows to the boxes. They then move the skier or snowboarder from the box with the gold star along the path according to the code they created. This helps students learn the importance of creating each step of code in the correct sequence in order to get the the desired response, why sequence matters in a computer program, and the importance of checking / testing code.

Each winter coding deck includes 20 unique cards that play in random order so each play of the deck is different.

What other educators are saying about this resource:

"I absolutely LOVE this resource! It is a great new way to have students practice coding. I had never used Boom Cards before. I had no problems though, thanks to the clear and simple directions you provided. I easily shared the cards with students by creating a Fast Pin. I used the Creating Computer Code cards with 2nd grade and the Computer Code Practice cards with 3rd grade. My students and I really enjoy the winter theme and it was a perfect addition to my winter coding activities. Thank you!" - Kristin G.

"My kids love these Boom Cards, they are so engaging! We are a STEM school so having Boom Cards for Coding is perfectly aligned with our charter. We are face to face and the parents love knowing that they can access their child's boom card decks and they get to see the great STEM content that this "deck" provides!" - Jennifer B.

"This is a great way to introduce coding to younger students and it worked fantastic remotely!" - Jamece S.

"Thanks so very much for creating this resource! It really helped me teach the concept of coding!" - Roxane M.

"This is such a great resource for both plugged and unplugged coding. It was great to see how my students collaborated." - ChLoris C.
