This winter-themed “Color by Vowel Sounds” product provides your beginning literacy learners with lots of opportunities to sharpen their phonemic awareness as they listen for vowel sounds and follow a color code that corresponds with those sounds. This product includes 10 worksheets, each with a “color/vowel sound” chart and a black line illustration with a winter theme. Most (but not all) sections of the illustration contain a word to be pronounced by the student. After the student pronounces the word, s/he listens for the VOWEL SOUND & colors the space according to the chart. The vowel sounds included in this packet are:
short & long a
short & long e
short & long i
short & long o
/oo/ as in "school"
/oo/ as in "book"
These vowel sounds are represented by a number of different letter patterns - some “regular” and some “irregular”- which necessitates accurate phoneme segmentation, and sometimes results in choosing a sound that does not include the same letter name, which is “tricky” for some students. For example, “eight” begins with a “long a” sound & “true” ends with an /oo/ sound. All of the worksheets, with the exception of worksheet # 4, also have a “Bonus” section in which the students locate a word that does not follow a regular, “learned” letter pattern for the sound represented. Although this is challenging, I think it is an important component of the work because:
• English is NOT a totally phonetically regular language, and students need to incorporate visual memory into their reading/spelling strategy “tool box.”
• Given the expectation that they will find the 1-2 words that “break the rule”, students will automatically become more engaged in fine tuning their phonemic awareness as they practice phoneme segmentation while they complete each worksheet.
Several spaces on the worksheets were left “blank” either because the space was too tiny or the number of words to pronounce was getting too high. You may choose to have your students color these as they wish, or leave the spaces white.
An answer key is provided for every worksheet.
