Seeking winter English Language Arts printable activities that are no-prep, self-grading, and with a prize?

It's more than just a printable ELA escape room or breakout, more than winter color by code, or an origami craft. You have just found a rare combination of all of these activities -- a unique printable winter activity for your middle school students that's no-prep and self-grading!

And there's a cool prize at the end of the activity!

Here's how this no-prep ELA printable activity works:

  1. It all starts with Jack Frost. He's cold and very particular about what he likes and doesn't like, but everything he likes has something in common. Can your students figure out the rule in this brain teaser puzzle?
  2. Next, students reconstruct an inspirational quote about winter that's been scrambled: "Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl."
  3. The journey continues on to an enjoyable crossword search puzzle worksheet -- students solve crossword-style clues to find the answers in a word search grid. There's a funny winter riddle to solve that will make even the most sophisticated 8th graders laugh (actually, it's perfect for students in grades 6-11).
  4. And finally, there's the prize -- the lovely, lovely prize. Based on their answers to the other puzzles, students use the key provided to color in the tiny house color by code page. Cut it out, fold it up (instructions provided), and there's a cozy Scandinavian-inspired tiny house as a prize.

It's self-grading! If the students solved the puzzles correctly, the number of windows on the house will be correct!

All of the answers are included, even a correct house. All you have to provide is colored markers, scissors, and a bit of glue. No physical locks or Google forms required!

Add a little LED tealight and the blank windows will allow the light through! They are really charming -- we have them going in our home just for fun!

Use in small groups for team-building and collaborative learning.

Kids can even do the puzzles independently.

Your students will get a prize they can take home with them.

Teaches vocabulary, ELA, lateral thinking, and perseverance.

The graphics style used throughout this resource is called "Hygge" - it's reflective of the art of the Danish people during winter --- the art of getting cozy! There's a paragraph describing this style in more detail, and what it means to the Danish people, so there's a little more learning as a bonus!
