Winter Fun Literacy and Math

The Winter theme unit has been created to assist you in meeting your common core curriculum outcomes.

The unit consists of:

➢ Three emergent readers (professionally illustrated) offered in both color and blank and white. These readers introduce key reading strategies, beginning letter sounds and common sight words that can be used for shared and guided reading.
➢ “Snow Maze Game” students roll a die and move their players following the arrows identifying focus initial sounds of pictures displayed and printing the corresponding letters associated with these sounds.
➢ “Follow the Penguin Sight Word Path” students roll a die and move their players along the penguin’s path, saying the sight words displayed on the penguins.
➢ List of related literature selections
➢ Math focus is on recognizing and printing numbers to 20. Ten and twenty-frame cards and dotted printing sheet is included. The focus will also be on recognizing if numbers are greater, less or equals to. The students will also be measuring penguins.
➢ Craft suggestions and templates related to suggested literature suggestions.
➢ Science sorting cards are also included.

This theme is meant to be used for a two week time period and is based on a balanced literacy philosophy.
