This activity packet includes 3 ELA activities and 3 Math activities for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The packet includes:

Emergent Reader- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.7 Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

Writing Prompt- My favorite Olympic sport is…
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

ABC Order- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Go for the Gold Number Order- Laminate and cut out the medals. The students will mix up the medals and put them in order from 1-100. After the students order the medals, they can record their answers onto the recording sheet.
CCSS.Math.Content.1.NBT.A.1 Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Roll for the Gold- The students will work in pairs for this activity. Each student will need a “Roll for the Gold” paper. The students will also need a dice. Students will take turns rolling his or her die. The student will color in the number that he or she has rolled (if the student rolls a three, color to three). The first student to get to the 100 wins!

Tally the Medals- Cut out and laminate the task cards. Students will count the tally marks under each flag on the task card. The students will transfer the total to the worksheet and choose which country has won the most medals.
