I created this festive set of holiday inferencing cards since my students will be learning how to make inferences during the month of December. Since every classroom has a range of levels, I’ve included two levels of cards. Each set has 24 cards.
The Level 1 set contains a short reading passage (3-5 sentences). After each reading passage, the card prompts students to answer one question such as, “What can you infer?” “Who are they?” “Where are they?” or “What’s happening?” The variety of questions guides students to apply context clues and their own background knowledge to infer what is probably true about each situation.
The Level 2 set of inference cards asks students to infer three things about each reading passage, so they must think beyond the more obvious inference. (The reading passage is the same at both levels.) For most of my students, I mix both sets so they have a variety of easier cards and more challenging ones.
