Have your students shop for their own winter holiday meal! All you need are these worksheets and some grocery store ads :) Set a budget for your students. Have them add up subtotals and a final total. Then, give them a coupon at the end to subtract!
- Aligns with Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) and Next Generation Learning Standards (NGLS)
- Great opportunities for cross-content area connections (ie. write a recipe, creative writing, financial literacy, science (how to cook a turkey, etc)
- Easy to differentiate (lower/higher budget, adding/and subtracting decimals, etc.)
- Great for several grade levels (2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th)
*In my class I used this with a budget of $10 (1,000 cents, since we are working on adding and subtracting within 1,000). This is great place value practice as well! They had so much fun doing this, and the discourse was amazing. Students discussed their budgets and what food items went well together! Parents loved seeing this activity come home. Many were glad that they were practicing an important life skill while doing math!!
