Description
Are you ready for your students to go deeper with their learning? Are you looking for ways to hit the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy? This inquiry driven, cross-curricular learning framework focused on winter will have your students self-directing their own learning and constructing knowledge like never before.
This winter PhenomBL resource includes an overview of the Phenomenon-Based Learning framework, an outline of the unit and planning tools, and graphic organizers to help your students synthesize their learning.
How subjects can be integrated in this unit:
Work on reading skills while exploring informational texts about winter, winter holidays, winter sports, and more.
Work on writing skills while writing narratives based in winter, how to play a winter sport or how snowflakes are formed, or reporting on research findings.
Work on math skills while measuring and weighing snow and ice, exploring winter temperatures around the world, or exploring symmetry and shapes in snowflakes.
Work on science/STEAM skills while learning about winter, ice, and snow, ways people and animals adapt to the cold, seasonal differences in northern and southern hemispheres, creating science experiments involving ice or snow, exploring the auroras, and more.
Work on social studies skills while exploring winter traditions around the world, the economic impact of winter in different communities, winter games and sports, and so much more.
**Informational texts are not included in this unit. What is included are the planning guides and resources to use texts on your students' levels. PhenomBL is student-centered so texts will should be based on the needs of individual classes and students.
About Phenomenon-Based Learning:
Phenomenon-based learning is an instructional strategy used successfully in Finland (largely based on research from experts in the US) which allows students to go deeper in their understanding of the content. In the US, we call it “interdisciplinary studies” or "cross curricular” but it is really much bigger than that.
