This game is great for expressive language skills, but you can also use it to target categories, associations, describing, articulation, word matching, phonological awareness skills, synonyms, antonyms, conversation skills, turn taking, teach Spanish Vocabulary …the list is pretty endless. I use this in small group therapy, but it is a great activity for a whole class to play as well. Each student takes a turn picking out a word. They must answer the question They must answer the question “¿Qué relación hay entre _____ y el Invierno?” (“What does _____ have to do with Winter? How are they related?”). The student’s answer must be in a complete sentence and must have the call word and “Invierno” in the answer. “¿Qué relación hay entre frío y el Invierno?” Hace frío en el Invierno (Ex: “What does cold have to do with Winter?” It is cold in the winter.). When the student answers correctly, all students with that call word on their board can cover that word with a marker, chip, animal cracker, skittles, etc…. If the answer is incorrect, or not in sentence form, another student may have a turn to answer that question. The student who covers 5 in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) first wins. Of course you can play Blackout by covering all the words, or a shorter version by declaring that the first person to cover any 5 words on the board is the winner. Have fun!
