This activity is perfect for students learning to identify and write with linking verbs! Students are given the opportunity to briefly review linking verbs, see linking verbs in action, and then creatively describe a "Winter creature" using linking verbs. After writing their descriptive sentences, students may use the templates provided to illustrate and create the creature that they described. Students may unleash their imagination as they describe snowmen and gingerbread men (or women!) that are unlike any we've ever seen! In the past, my students have created astoundingly awesome "punk rock" snowmen, "ballerina" gingerbread women, and other wildly creative creatures that they were able to correctly describe using linking verbs. Your students will "appear" excited when this opportunity is presented to them and "become" masters of identifying and using linking verbs correctly in writing! In addition, several tips for carrying out this acivity, a link to EXCELLENT templates for your winter creatures, and ideas for extending this activity are included in this file. Enjoy! *This activity has been revised to include a bonus page of notes and examples to use during instruction and as a guide for students while completing the activity.
