Description

Winter literacy centers must include making words! These winter literacy centers are perfect for grades 1-4, it really allowed my students to work at their instructional level without a lot of prep on my part! These activities are hands-on, differentiated, and easy to use. The letter tiles are on the student work sheets, so it's a copy and go!

I spent extensive time building the answer keys for these lessons- I carefully chose words that covered high frequency words, word family words, and words with variants.

Making words covers a ton of common core skills- like phonemic awareness, sight words reading, word family patterns, and multisyllable words while challenging kids to discover the "mystery word". I have engaged students with this from the earliest reader to struggling 4th graders. It is classroom-tested and kid-approved.

Making words activities are a MUST-HAVE in any balanced literacy classroom. It's one of the few activities that truly lends itself to differentiation.

We've include 10 (yes 10!) making words lessons that include answer keys for each lesson so you can easily customize this pack for the needs of your students!

Basically, you get one making words lesson for each week of winter! These making words lesson are perfect for literacy centers, whole group instruction (if you use the larger teacher letter cards provided) or small group instruction.

Making words is based on the research of one of my favorite literacy gurus Pat Cunningham. Problem being, I used to have my students have master letter tiles in their desks. It was a hot mess.
Someone always lost something!

SO, we've made these sheets with the tiles ON the recording sheet. No lost tiles. No drama, and best of all...NO PREP!

Just copy and go. These would be great for sub tubs too.

These lesson provide real, hands-on experiences for your students. I've used making words during my classroom observations, and my principals have always been thrilled with the engagement of my students.

This pack includes:
-10 Winter Making Word Student Sheets
-10 Teacher Answer Keys
-Enlarged Teacher Letter Cards (so you can use them on pocket charts)
-an Ideas for Use Sheet that includes tips for differentiating instruction for your right-brained learners!

Making this pack was a labor of love. It took many hours to compile word lists that made sense. I hope you find it as useful in your literacy blocks as I have mine over the years!
