Developmentally appropriate Winter literacy centers for the preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten classroom! This resource is perfect for all developmental and cognitive levels of early childhood. The centers are fun, engaging, and offer challenges and reinforcement of basic skills.
This resource is set up with 3 levels of developmentally appropriate Rhyming centers for the early childhood classroom. Every class is different, every student is different, so this resource gives you the option of starting out slowly, building on what your students know, and offering a challenge as skills are mastered.
Level 1: Winter: Is it a Rhyme?
This beginning level will help students notice the similar ending sounds of words. As they say each word on the picture card, they will look at the two side pictures and say each of those words too. Listening to themselves make the sounds and listening to teachers repeat the words will help them learn which sounds rhyme and which do not. It is a fantastic way to go slowly and really emphasize the ending sounds of words the kids hear and notice what is similar and what is different. Students can put a clothespin on the rhyming word, or you can ask them to clip the word that DOESN’T rhyme.
Level 2: Rhyme and Match
This center activity builds on the sorting activity by finding rhymes that match each other. Some of the same pictures/ word in the first activity are used in this activity to reinforce rhyming families. 15 rhyming families are included to increase rhyming vocabulary.
Level 3: Winter Rhyme and Cover
This activity builds on the first two, but adds the element of finding MORE rhyming words, or finding what DOESN’T rhyme. Each card has a anchor word for the rhyming family. Each anchor word has 3 words in the same rhyming family. Students are challenged to find all the words in the represented rhyming families, or think another way and find the one word that does not rhyme.
Choose the center that works best for your class!
