Why is dramatic play important in a kindergarten classroom? I could give you a million reasons why I choose to do dramatic play but I will keep it short for the sake of time. One of the most important reasons is students develop self-regulation during play. Students have to take turns, share, and express their feelings in an appropriate way. And the reason your administrator will love... they are able to review previously taught mathematics and language art skills.
Self-regulation and the social skills covered in dramatic play can be difficult for many students to master. A dramatic play center is the perfect way to have students work on these skills. There is a great deal of conversation and listening that happens between students during dramatic play. The amount of language and social skills students practice during dramatic play is HUGE! They have to take turns and share materials. They have to engage in conversation with their peers and use content specific vocabulary. A large number of social and language skills are covered during dramatic play.
Dramatic play isn't just a great way for your students to work on their social and language skills; you can also include many mathematics and language arts skills to your dramatic play centers. In this center students are able to read and write recipes. They work on counting and writing numbers. They are even able to work on money identification and counting.
