This is a perfect way to review the elements of a story and teach students narrative writing all while watching one of the most famous holiday movies of all time: A Christmas Story.
Students write down actual examples (including specific lines from the narrator in the movie) that include funny characterization, vivid descriptions of setting and plot, a strong resolution, etc. It also asks them to analyze the theme, and answer other important questions about the movie in order to help them with their own writing.
After they have several examples from the movie, they use those examples to write a winter narrative of their own. This hand-out will clearly walk them through that process. A Common Core aligned rubric is included at the end so that students have a clear understanding of how they are graded and have an opportunity to make changes before their final draft. *This rubric also requires them to put the narrative writing standards in their own words so that they are clear about the Common Core expectations.
Finally, I have included an answer key with specific examples of narrative lines from the movie that can be used as strong examples for each writing step.
