Winter Olympics: Informational Text – Reading with Nonfiction
This Winter Olympic unit provides students with informational text about some of the sporting events in the Winter Olympic Games. There are 6 different sports covered and each sport package consists of:
•1-1 1/2 page(s) of informational text with accompanying video links and graphics
•questions on a literal, inferential, evaluative and opinion level
•a word study section that focuses on specific vocabulary, figurative and descriptive language, etc.
•extension activities to push thinking beyond the text
Each of these six Winter Olympic sports were chosen under the theme of Fast and Furious because speed is an integral component of these events (check the Preview for the specific events). This Winter Olympics Package also includes an optional research project for the students to further their investigations.
Everything is ready to go, no prep required. This unit works well before or after the Winter Olympics. It can stand alone as a Reading unit in the nonfiction area. Suggestions for implementation and differentiation are included. Perfect for students in the middle years. This unit is aligned with Common Core Standards. This package is a perfect supplementary unit to any Olympic study.
