This literacy comprehension product includes a variety of CCSS aligned engaging activities based on six children’s picture books. These books were chosen not only because they are excellent children’s literature, but because they represent more than one genre. Young literacy learners should be exposed to a variety of genres as they begin to develop comprehension strategies through read aloud and discussion. This book selection includes a biography, an informational text, two fiction stories, and two books that provide lots of rich vocabulary and language as a winter storm and a winter nature walk are described. Each book is good mentor text for a variety of reasons, and so the packet does not include “cookie cutter” graphic organizers, but information about and /or strategies that work best with each genre and writing style. For example, The Story of Snow gives a detailed explanation of how a snowflake is formed & includes some cause & effect text structure, so following listening to this book, students practice identifying cause and effect both in and out of context. The product includes 2-5 literacy activities for each of the following books:
• Thomas’ Snowsuit by Robert Munsch
• Snow by Cynthia Rylant
• Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin
• Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton
• The Story of Snow by Mark Cassino
• Sugar White Snow and Evergreens by Felicia Sanzari Chernesky
The activities in this packet can be used for a wide grade level range, using the materials for direct instruction and guided practice with early literacy learners and independent/literacy center work for more experienced students. Also, several of the activities provide two versions to provide differentiation for students at different instructional levels. For example Cause & Effect worksheet #1 has students cutting and gluing an “effect” for 5 given causes, while worksheet #2 challenges the students to cut & glue 10 mixed phrases to determine the same cause/effect relationships. These differentiated worksheets are labeled and an explanation is given in the “Table of Contents and Instructional Information” section.
Please take a look at the “Table of Contents” and samples from the packet by clicking on “Preview”.. Please note that I have reduced the page size for the preview (all pages are 8 X 11) and the preview pages are not necessarily paired with like topics. I truly appreciate your interest in this product!
If these materials seem to be a good instructional fit for your students, you may want to take a look at my store, which features K-5th grade materials in a variety of subject areas.
