Winter Place Value Activities Snowman Game & Snowman Craft

This snowman game, is a super-fun way to practice place value.

There are several ways to use it.

As a whole-group assessment game:

I’ve included both a full page snowman, as well as a two-on-a-page pattern. There’s one for a two-digit snowman, as well as a three-digit snowman.

Students can draw in their own snowman face, or color my pattern.

To turn these into dry erase “boards”, cut squares out of glossy photo paper. ( Patterns are included.)

Each student needs 3/4 to glue on top of the squares on their 2/3 digit place value snowman.

My students keep their snowman in their math journals.

We play the game once or twice a week.

They absolutely LOVE making their snowman & practicing place value, and really don’t seem to get tired of it. The place value “lightbulbs” go on rather quickly in their heads.

If your school has a laminator, you can also simply laminate everyone’s snowman and use throughout the winter months.

Print; laminate and trim the number cards (0-9) and toss them in a mitten or winter cap. Choose 2/3 students to pick a card.

This will become the 2 or 3-digit number that students write in the number square of the snowman’s hat, then figure out place value, writing the appropriate numbers in the ones, tens and hundreds boxes, using a dry erase marker.

Besides a whole-group activity, set the game up as an independent, math center:

Color a few snowmen, laminate and trim.

Keep in a file folder, along with 3 separate baggies filled with a set of cards and a dry erase marker.

Children play for about 5 minutes, choosing 2/3 cards at a time, then using them to make a 2/3-digit number.

A worksheet provides more reinforcement, and a means to check comprehension, while practicing several other math standards.
