Bundle Description

Here’s a set of three winter STEM challenges that all involve snow! Students learn about snowflake formation, talk about building snowmen, and learn a little about igloos. Building the three structures involve STEM and a little bit of Art!

Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. Students will plan independently and then join with teammates as they create the best design possible. Of course, constant improvements take place as students try their designs.

Some specifics about each design challenge:

  • In the Snowflake STEM Challenge students will build a model of a snowflake using various supplies. Students must work to make the shape symmetrical, beautiful, and detailed. I also added the requirement that the final product should be a stand-alone model so they could be hung. We also added a twist to this design by having students use a budget and purchase the materials needed. The challenge begins with a discussion of how snowflakes form and about their many characteristics! Add this STEM task to your winter studies! What a fun way to extend your learning about snow, winter weather events, and cover some science standards! Materials needed include: White pipe cleaners, Cotton swabs, Craft sticks, Toothpicks, Decorative items, White glue, and Calculators.
  • In the Igloo STEM Challenge students will build a model of an igloo. What sets this task apart is the building materials. Students will only have a few, but must still collaborate well in order to make the best use of those supplies. They need to make a circular igloo with a domed roof and an opening with a tunnel. The supplies are easy to gather! Best of all, prep is super simple! Your students will love this experience with igloos and you will love watching the teamwork and creativity as they problem-solve. Materials needed include: Cotton balls, Packing peanuts, Cardboard tubes, Index cards- two sizes, Toothpicks, and Paper plates.
  • In the Snowman STEM Challenge students will build a model of a snowman using only a few supplies. One is newspaper for the snowman frame and the other is tissue to cover the snowman. Students will also decorate their snowman in typical clothing or other décor. Will students build wide and round models or tall, thin models? Can they get the snowman to stand up? Will they make great decisions about how to use the materials? This is a fabulous challenge that is a lot more difficult than you would expect. My students were quite surprised about how hard this challenge turned out to be! Materials needed include: Newspaper, Rolls of toilet tissue, Masking tape, Scissors, White glue (optional), and Construction paper in many colors.

Check the individual listing for each package for more information and more detailed previews. All three challenges have a scoring rubric and an editable file containing all forms! The editable forms include lab sheets, rubrics, and constraints pages.

This set is a combination of three STEM Challenges. If you prefer they may be purchased separately:
