This lab will add some fun to your classroom during the winter season while allowing students to learn about the scientific method! Students will be introduced to the scenario where Elsa is wanting to decorate her castle with beautiful homemade snowflakes. She would make these snowflakes using pipe cleaners and powdered laundry detergent (Borax).
Students will design a scientific question, create a hypothesis, identify variables, follow the procedures to make the crystal snowflake, collect data, analyze and draft a conclusion. The first day includes the experimental design portion and making the pipe cleaner snowflake. The second day allows students to make a snowflake solution and attempt multiple trials. The third day analyzes the results from submerging the snowflake in the solution overnight and challenges students to think critically to answer extension questions for class discussion.
