Using a group of words related to one theme or topic, students order the words from most important to least important (in their opinion).

The teacher has the option to give all students the same list of words, so the class will create a group of simile poems centered around the same theme. Or, students can each receive a different list. 16 total word lists related to 4 different winter themes (see below).

After students order their word strips, they create similes using the 3 words they value as most important and present the similes on a 3 sectioned paint chip to create the poem.

Students need prior knowledge of similes and how to write a simile to complete the activity.

Activity Includes:

CCSS L.4 and L.5 for upper elementary
