You have several options on how to use this unit. You can do all of it in class teach the skills as you go or if you teach students who know many of these skills, it could be a month long project that they could do at home. I usually send the whole packet home at the beginning of the unit, but then guide them through each section teaching the skills that they will need for each project and reviewing the parts of the packet that they will need for that week.
Each rubric also includes a line for an oral explanation of something that goes with the project. Make sure that the students see that part of the rubric and that you teach that skill during the unit.
The skills include summarizing, descriptions, adjectives, character traits, sequencing, organization of text, and research. You can also tie in Social Studies, Science and Math skills as you go.
The students will research:
-a sport that could be involved in a winter sports competition-
They will create a main idea and detail organizer,
write a summary, and
create a project about a sport.
They will then create one of the following projects:

Play or Skit
