Looking for ideas to support the writing development of students in your classroom? Use these narrative, informative, and opinion winter sport writing activities!

The “Winter Sports Writing Activities” package contains over twenty writing projects that are presented in a variety of different ways to meet the individual needs of the students in your class. Students practice narrative, informative, and opinion writing as they work through the various activities.

Each writing project is presented as journal prompts, class questions, and sentence starters. Graphic organizers and blank writing pages are also included to promote the writing process.

Ideas for Use:

Journal Writing Prompts

Students glue the writing prompts into their journals. They use the target question(s) to help them compose a piece of writing about the given prompt. Students can use notebooks for journals or you can create journals using the included templates. A blank journal template writing page and cover are included if you want to create journals for your students. Templates are provided that include primary writing lines as well as regular lines.

Class Questions

Post the writing prompt you want your students to use in their writing. Have students use this prompt to complete the one of the included graphic organizers. Organizers are provided for narrative, informative, and opinion writing. Students use the graphic organizers for support as they work through the writing process and complete their assignments.

Tiered Writing Pages

Students who require support with their writing can use the tiered writing page that matches their individual need. Each writing page includes a sentence starter for students to use to begin their writing. Some pages include room for an illustration while others focus on writing only. Some pages include primary lines while others have regular lines. Choose the writing page that matches the instructional level of the students in your class. Blank pages are included for students who do not require the extra support of a sentence starter.

Class Books

Use the tiered templates to create a class book for each type of writing - narrative, informative, and opinion. Students who are able to provide basic information are given the basic template, while students who are able to provide more details are given a template that encourages them to explain their answers.

Word Bank

A one page word bank is included to support students with the spelling of winter sports related words.

Spelling Dictionary

Make individual spelling dictionaries for your students. Included in the dictionaries are the winter sports words from the word bank. Students can add other words as needed.

Vocabulary Booklets

Create vocabulary booklets for your students to study winter sport words. Four templates are included. Each template is available with primary lines or regular lines. Choose the templates that match the instructional level of your students. As well, a color and black and white cover is included for use on the front of your vocabulary booklets.

Writing Checklist Bookmarks

Provide students with a writing skills bookmark that matches their skill level. There are four versions of the bookmark, along with another bookmark that can be tailored to the unique needs of your students. Bookmarks are included in color and black and white.

Writing Assessments

Self, peer, and teacher assessments are provided for students and teachers to use with the various narrative, informative, and opinion writing activities. Use the writing assessments to support students with the identification of areas to focus on in their writing.
