One of our goals as teachers is to encourage our students to develop their writing. This involves many different steps, but with practice and guidance, the writing does improve and become more interesting and descriptive.
This set of activities has been developed to help students add adjectives, adverbs, and more dynamic verbs to their writing. Expanding the stories to more than 2 or 3 sentences is also encouraged as the students are ready for it. For more advanced writers, punctuation and spelling could also be included. The criteria will depend on the abilities of the students doing the activities.
The goal is to go from good, to better, to best. At the end of the writing activity, they will evaluate the writing as good, better, or best and they will have others evaluate it too. For some children the terms good, very good, and great will be a better choice, so both ways have been added. The criteria needs to be identified before the evaluation so they have some guidelines to follow.
A sample of criteria for gold, silver, and bronze has been included as well as a criteria marking sheet. Please adapt this as necessary for your students.
The theme of winter sports has been chosen because the Winter Olympics 2014 that happened in February. Of course, these activities can be used independently from the olympics.
I have included medals that can be printed and handed out with the writing if desired. I would use these to make comments for my students, but you can use them in many different ways.
Sample writing activities have been provided as well as a variety of themed lined sheets for writing. The pages have been provided in color and in black and white.
