"What is in the Den?" Decodable Text Set

These winter-themed decodable texts have been so much fun for my students to use in my science of reading intervention groups. As kids develop their phonics skills, having plenty of different types of decodable readers for them to use for practice is essential.

This set of decodable readers allows you to make a science connection as well—students learn about how different types of animals hibernate. Students can also use the graphic organizers included in the product to create a writing project on a hibernating animal of their choice. Language comprehension is a critical part of reading development, and resources like this one help bring that aspect of the science of reading into your instruction.

These affordable little books are easy to use and will give your reading groups meaning and connection to the season. For an additional twist, these are written in the “What Is in the Den?” format so students can read the clues and guess what each little story is about. Again, it’s important to add language comprehension to our phonics lessons in our science of reading curriculum, so we can give our little readers an extra boost as they build mental models of texts.

These texts are foldable, so all you have to do is run a copy of each page, fold it into fourths, and you have a book. It’s so much easier than trying to figure out which page goes in the copier in which direction. Just print, fold, and go!

This set of decodable texts includes 9 differentiated topics for a total of 18 books. For instance, there are two texts where there is a fox in the den. The first is centered around mixed CVC patterned words: It’s numbered 1. The other has mixed blends for additional challenge. The more challenging text is #1a. Each of the challenge texts has an “a” after the number. Each skill and number are clearly designated at the top so you can organize your copies.

The following skills are included in this set:

    • Mixed CVC
    • Digraphs
    • Blends
    • vCe
    • Syllable Division Rules
    • Vowel Teams

Additionally, this product contains a set of letter flash cards and a set of vowel team and consonant digraph cards for use in your small groups.

"Max the Dog" CVC Patterned Words Decodable Text Set

Decodable texts are a critical part of a Science of Reading curriculum for early readers and intervention groups. I love creating products to make my small group reading intervention groups more effective. My younger groups have been progressing well, but they need more practice with CVC patterned words before we move on. I wanted some seasonal texts that I could easily send home with kids. On the other hand, I didn’t want much prep time. That’s why I created this set.

This set of decodable texts includes very short decodable CVC patterned stories. There is a story for short a, i, o, u, and e. the rest are mixed CVC patterns. There are a total of 12 stories with a set of letter flash cards.

I gave each student a quart-sized zip top bag. I used the freezer version to make them just a little stronger. I used permanent marker to put kids’ names on the bags along with a short note to parents about listening to their child read each night, then sending the bag back to school to get more books. So far, most kids are coming back with the bag! Since I don’t have a great deal of money invested, it’s not a big loss if I need to replace lost bags or reprint a book or two.

Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals (including humans) and the places they live. Examples of relationships could include that deer eat buds and leaves, therefore, they usually live in forested areas; and, grasses need sunlight so they often grow in meadows. Plants, animals, and their surroundings make up a system.

Read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive. Examples of patterns of behaviors could include the signals that offspring make (such as crying, cheeping, and other vocalizations) and the responses of the parents (such as feeding, comforting, and protecting the offspring).
