This is a black and white version of my original Mitten Match
. If you like the activity but don’t want to waste your ink on colored mittens, then use this black and white version and print the mittens on colored paper or cardstock.
Mitten Match is a fun winter themed rhyming activity that will help your students practice their rhyming and word decoding skills and enjoy doing it!
Description: This product contains 48 white mittens with rhyming words. They come in 4 per page and measure about 3.5”x3” (9.5 cm x 7 cm).
• 24 (12 pairs) three-letter words (CVC) – words like cat-hat, red-bed, lip-zip, and etc.
• 24 (12 pairs) four-letter words with the “bossy/silent e” (CVC + e) – words like take-lake, kite-bite, tube-cube.
No pictures are included, only words, so students are “forced” to use their word decoding skills to find rhyming pairs.
Directions: You can have your students simply place matching mittens next to each other, or clip them together with a clothespin. Another fun way to pair them up is to punch a hole on the bottom of each mitten and connected them with a pipe cleaner. In this case, you would need to use thick laminating sheets to prevent ripping. You can also have your students pull a shoelace, a short string of yarn or ribbon through the holes to connect 2 mittens.
Suggestions: These mittens can be used for small group teacher-guided activities or for an independent literacy center.
