Mitten Match II is a fun winter themed rhyming activity that will help your students practice their rhyming and word decoding skills and enjoy doing it!
Description: This product contains 48 colorful mittens with rhyming words. They come in 4 per page, in 6 colors (blue, green, yellow, pink, purple, and red), and measure about 3.5”x3” (9.5 cm x 7 cm).
• 12 pairs of words with the “bossy r” or r-controlled vowels (far-car, born-horn, cart-part, sort-port, park-bark, fur-her, pork-fork, form-storm, dirt-hurt, yarn-barn, firm-germ, girl-curl).
• 12 pairs of words with digraphs sh, ch, th, ph, qu or wh (ship-chip, quest-chest, then-when, shop-chop, chin-thin, thick-chick, that-chat, shy-why, fish-dish, much-such, chill-Phil, bath-path).
No pictures are included, only words, so students are “forced” to use their word decoding skills to find rhyming pairs.
Directions: Print the mittens on cardstock, laminate, and cut out.
Place matching mittens next to each other, or clip them together with a clothespin. Another fun way to pair them up is to punch a hole on the bottom of each mitten and connect them with a pipe cleaner, a short piece if yarn or a ribbon. In this case, you would need to use thick laminating sheets to prevent ripping.
Suggestions: These mittens can be used for small group teacher-guided activities or for an independent literacy center.
I have another, less advanced, version of this activity in my store: Mitten Match
It has words with short vowels (CVC) and words with the bossy/silent e.
