3 Number Comparison Activities
Greater Than, Less Than, and Equal To
This is a set of 3 number comparison games. One game focuses on greater than, one on less than, and one on equal to. They can be played with a small group (math stations or guided math groups) or individually.
Less Than Game – Small Group
Each child will have their own game board. Copy this on paper. Make 3 copies of the snowball number cards on cardstock and laminated them. Use the snowball cards with the numbers 0 – 9 on them for this game. Children will take turns drawing a card. They will find a number on the board that their number is less than. They will write the number that’s on their card under the number on the snow ball on the game board. To help find a number, I have my children say, “Five is less than.” If a child draws a card and there is not a number that is less than left, they lose a turn. A sun card means the child loses a turn. A snowflake card means to draw 2 more cards. The child who fills in a number on every snowball first wins. They can color their game board when finished.
Less Than Activity – Individual
This is played the same way but take out the sun and snowflake cards. I give each child 1 set of 0 - 9 cards to use. If they run out of cards they know to mix the cards up and use them again. Or you can use a 0 – 9 spinner instead of the cards. You could use magnetic numbers placed in a cup for children to pull out.
Greater Than Game
This game is played the same way as the less than game but use the number cards 1 – 10 cards. The children will write the number they drew on the top half of the snowflake.
Less Than Game
This game is also played the same way but use the 0 – 10 cards. The children will write the number drawn on the other side of the number on the snowman.
