Project Description:

During this project based learning (PBL) unit, your students will work toward becoming an Array Architect for the Winter Wonderland Festival in Snowflake Valley. As part of their job application process, they must incorporate a series of arrays and equal groups into the design of a Winter Wonderland Festival. Here are the steps your students will take as they work towards being hired as an Array Architect:

• Sketch a Winter Wonderland Festival map, which includes arrays and equal groups.
• Label the arrays and equal groups on the festival map.
• Identify the multiplication sentence, repeated addition sentence, and fact family related to each array on their map.
• Analyze each array on their map, and its relation to the various multiplication properties (Associative, Commutative, Distributive, and Identity Property).
• Complete a self-assessment of their project using a three-part rubric
• Assemble their project according to very specific visual instructions

Complete Student Independence = Maximized Learning:

The beauty of this in-depth project based learning (PBL) unit is that your students can complete every one of the steps listed above independently. The detailed visuals and step-by-step instructions featured in this D.I.Y. Project Guide eliminate the need for daily guided PBL lessons.

The only instructional time you need to contribute is a 10 minute mini-lesson on the day you launch your PBL unit. After that, your students will be off on an independent project based learning (PBL) adventure that will last for days.

This project based learning resource if perfect math enrichment for advanced learners, or center work for early finishers.

All About D.I.Y. Project Guides by Core Inspiration:

Love Project Based Learning (PBL)…but crunched for instructional time?

Most teachers get a hint of anxiety that sneaks in every time we think of tackling project based learning (PBL). It’s totally normal. You are only one person, and it’s crazy challenging to guide one math group through an entire project based learning experience while delivering quality instruction, and formative assessments to all the learners who have not yet mastered the topic at hand.

During your multiplication unit…things are going to be different.

Let your students take the wheel with this D.I.Y. Project Guide.

What makes this D.I.Y. Project Guide different from other PBL resources?

The secret ingredient to this ideal PBL resource is that it was designed with student independence in mind.

Every step of this PBL experience is outlined to a T with clear visuals and step-by-step instructions. Rubrics and reminders to reach higher will encourage your advanced learners to challenge themselves throughout the entire project, allowing you to rest easy and focus on instructing students who still need instruction on multiplication, as you advanced learners plug away on their PBL adventure.

Your advanced learners are going to practice the analysis and application skills they need. You can focus your brain power on planning lessons for the learners who need more direct instruction and guided practice. Finally project based learning is possible!
